Mindful Based Living Course for Young Adults

This course is designed to be facilitated over 8 or 10 sessions of approximately 40 minutes to 1hr duration, one session per week, with pupils of secondary school age (11-18 years old) or college age (18-21 years old) and is based on the Mindfulness Association’s adult 8-week Mindfulness Based Living Course (MBLC) with important modifications designed to facilitate and support the adolescent developing brain.  Each session of the MBLC-YA is accompanied by a PowerPoint to illustrate the main teaching points, a student manual and access to an app to download the weekly mindfulness practices.  However, each lesson is intended to be highly experiential.

Key Themes

Mindfulness training with young people has been positively associated, amongst other things, with the ability to sustain attention, empathy, clarity, resilience, an inclusive attitude, academic attainment, stress-management and emotional regulation. It has also been associated with reduced reactivity, impulsivity, angry and hostile behaviour, stress and rumination.

About this course

The course is an adolescent and youth version of the Mindfulness Association’s ‘Mindfulness Based Living Course’ (MBLC) and has been designed to help young people have an easier time at school, college and university as well as at home and within their peer groups. Helping them to cultivate qualities of attention and attitude and introducing skills to help navigate 21st Century living.

The course consists of 10 sessions of approximately 40-50 minutes’ duration (or 8 sessions of 60 minutes), normally delivered at a rate of 1 session per week .  Each session is supported by a PowerPoint presentation and the course is accompanied by a Student Manual and audio recordings which can be accessed online, via an app, or placed on a student intranet if your school has that facility.  The course is designed to be delivered to a full class of students in the classroom and does not require any special equipment.  It is suitable for pupils between 13 – 18 in schools as well as students aged 18 – 21 in further or higher education.
